1. PhD opportunities, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Leeds

The School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds is currently
advertising PhD Projects for 2010/11.

Please see the web page www.see.leeds.ac.uk for details.

Our research interests span studies of the Earth, the hydrosphere and the
atmosphere, and issues of environmental management and sustainability.
Research is grouped into four Institutes:

     * Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS)
     * Earth Surface Science Institute (ESSI)
     * Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics (IGT)
     * Sustainability Research Institute (SRI)

We expect to recruit around 45-50 PhD students for October 2010. A range
of studentships are available. The deadline for NERC Quota award
applications is February 28th 2010.

Other directly-funded studentships (Tied) are available. Some of these are
open to EU and non-EU applicants. See the web pages for specific
information.

For more information see: www.see.leeds.ac.uk
or contact Michelle Lesnianski (apply-phd@see.leeds.ac.uk)
2. Master of Science by Research studentship
A fully-funded Master of Science by Research studentship is available
immediately in the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the
University of Glasgow for one of the projects shown below:
(1) Large earthquakes in the world (Supervisors: Zhenhong Li, Tim Wright
(Leeds COMET+), Zoe Shipton)
(2) Active faults in Tibet (Supervisors: Zhenhong Li, Tim Wright (Leeds
COMET+), Zoe Shipton)
(3) Landslides and faults in the Three Gorges region, China (Supervisors:
Zhenhong Li, Trevor Hoey, Tim Wright (Leeds COMET+))
(4) Use of the Unified Model for InSAR atmospheric correction (Supervisors:
Zhenhong Li, Geoff Wadge (Reading COMET+))

Could you please bring the studentship to the attention of any students who
you think may be interested. For more details, please refer to:
http://www.ges.gla.ac.uk/staff/zli.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Zhenhong Li, Email:
Zhenhong.Li@ges.gla.ac.uk.

The deadline for application is 26th Feb, 2010.
3. PhD position, micro-meteorology
PhD student position in Meteorology with specialization in carbon
transport between inland lakes and the atmosphere

at the Department of Earth Sciences. *Starting date: *Open from the
application deadline.

The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and
Spatial Planning recently decided to support a 5-year strong research
environment on ?The Color of Water ? interplay with climate, and effects
on drinking water supply?. Within the program several post docs and PhD
students will be recruited. The positions will be based in Uppsala, and
there will be ambitious programs for integration and for the involvement
of senior guest researchers.

One part of the program aims at studying the exchange of methane between
lakes and the atmosphere by using instrumentation designed to directly
measure the important turbulent fluxes, the so called Eddy-Correlation
(EC) method. This method has not been used previously for measurements
of methane fluxes from lakes. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas; its
concentration has greatly increased during the industrial period. The
methane concentration leveled off during a couple of years with start
around 2000 but has now again started to increase. Previous studies
indicate that the contribution of methane by lakes to the total
atmospheric concentration may be in the order of 10-20% however more
measurements are needed. Earlier measurements have used the flux-chamber
method which has indicated a large temporal variability of the methane
flux which is due to episodic bubble events. By using the EC-method
these episodic bubble events will be measured more accurately which will
yield an improved qualitative and quantitative understanding of the lake
source to atmospheric methane. EC-measurements of the carbon dioxide
transport between lakes and the atmosphere will also be made in this
project which will contribute to give a better picture of the role of
lakes in the global carbon cycle. In addition a comparison with the
flux-chamber method will be made by using simultaneous measurements.

The applicant should have a university degree in meteorology or similar.
The successful candidate should have a solid base in mathematics and
physics. Field work will be required of the applicant, including
participation installing and maintaining a measurement site. Previous
experience of similar field work is beneficial. You should be interested
in informing other people about your work and cooperative ability is
important. In order to take part in departmental life you are expected
to know Swedish or learn it within two years.

*Applications* should include a CV, university transcripts that include
a list of courses and grades.

The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time
to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or
administrative can be part of position (max 20%).

The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to
those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful
completion of graduate studies. Local guidelines at Uppsala University
determine the salary levels. The university is striving for a more even
balance between genders. A majority of the PhD students within the
department are men. Women are, thus, especially invited to apply.
