The position will be located at the NOAA Science Center located in Camp Springs, Maryland. Responsibilities The successful candidate will be a member a team responsible for development and application of a novel re-calibration methodology for the historic IR Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data covering the period 1981-present, with the possibility of extending the data back to 1978. The end-result of this project will be a new AVHRR Fundamental Climate Data Record to be held at the National Climatic Data Center for use by climate researchers worldwide. The successful candidate can also expect to be given time for their own research including an early opportunity to exploit the long term recalibrated AVHRR data for climate change studies, for example. 2. Vacancy: Ocean Modeling PhD Project at the University of Reading (UK)
The Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, UK, seeks applicants for a PhD project on developing novel stochastic mixing schemes in ocean general circulation models. The expected start date is October 2010. Applicants should apply in time to be invited to our PhD visit day on Wednesday, 10 March 2010. For a project description and details of funding packages and how to apply, visit <http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~williams/> or e-mail Paul Williams (p.d.williams@reading.ac.uk).

The applicant is expected to have a masters degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences (including chemistry, engineering and mathematics), a thorough knowledge of Fortran 2003 and C/C++, OpenMP and MPI, UNIX, and at least one high-level scripting language, as well as experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Detailed knowledge of performance and scalability analysis tools is required. Familiarity with advanced workflow concepts, particularly in data rich environments, is especially desired. We are particularly interested in applicants interested in the following short- to medium-term tasks: 1. Optimization of codes for massively parallel computers, with emphasis on the thread level with respect to multi-core CPU architecture, to prepare our models for the new generation of HPC systems. 2. Performance investigations and optimization of hybrid parallel codes. 3. Research on the applicability of PGAS languages for our types of codes. An applicant's ability to make effective contributions in some subsets of these areas must be demonstrated by an appropriate track record. The position is initially offered for two years, with the possibility of becoming permanent thereafter. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be offered permanent employment at the outset.
